can of worms (pandora's box) installation

can of worms (pandora's box)
The can of worms (pandora’s box) installation is a humorous exploration of my relationship with my brain. I appreciate the contrast of the slimy connotation of the word “worm” juxtaposed with pleasantly textured fabric art pieces. The worms - a recurring theme in my art - have become a way for me to communicate the way my brain works with mental illness; they are also a symbol of rebirth because earthworms littering the sidewalk is a hallmark of spring (a purposefully less glamorous symbol of rebirth than caterpillar to butterfly). The action of the worms spilling out of the can is a metaphor for my experience living in my brain. It’s chaotic, colorful, varied, and a little confusing. It is both beautiful and overwhelming.

Note: At the time of this work's creation, I went by the name Roman instead of River.
